1990s

Derek Beaulieu, BA’96, MA’04, BEd’08, was a featured writer at Wordfest in Calgary this year.

Brian Ector, BComm’91, was appointed to the Canadian Investor Relations Institute’s board of directors. He is the vice-president of investor relations for Baytex Energy Corporation.

Robert Hawkes, LLB’93, chaired the transition team for Alberta Premier Alison Redford.

Janet Pliszka, BComm’94, is a Calgary family photographer and owns Visual Hues photography.

Sunni Shular, BSW’96, moved back to her hometown of Dresden, Ont., in November 2011 after serving as the full-time United Church of Canada minister for the Gitxsan First Nations congregations of Anspayaxw and Hazelton Pastoral Charges in Kispiox, B.C., from 2008 to 2011. Before entering the ministry, Sunni worked for six years as a child protection worker with Alberta Family Services—Native Division. The University of Calgary provided Sunni more than just a scholastic education. It provided emotional, spiritual and First Nations cultural support as well as a fine library and educators of the highest standards, which made obtaining her BSW a pleasure. Her time spent at the University of Calgary also encouraged further study and she obtained her Designated Lay Ministers diploma through the United Theological College in Montreal. Wonderful connections to her family and hometown called her back to Ontario, but her graduation from the BSW program will always be one of the greatest achievements of her life.
